we are in full swing of our second year of cub scouts. well, jonah is {and i am} in his second year and jett is in his first year.
this year we made it to the cuboree. we missed it last year cause...well, i don't remember why. but, i was determined to not miss it this year.
this is the only event our boys can earn their bb gun and archery belt loops. i just didn't want to miss it for a second year.
he hit the target two out of five shots. i may have a sharp-shooter on my hands!

jett and his new bud. {i love how these boys all become like third, fourth and fifth sons. the boys in my boys pack are all like my kids, too!}
dinner. you guys, i just love the cub master's wife/my friend, coleen! she prepares all this yummy food for every campout. and, yum! that's all i can say. thank you, coleen for dinner!
cub scouts, y'all. i love it. i love that my boys love it. i love going and having adult conversation with my girls {the other moms} on thursday nights. i love camping with my boys. i love, love, love it all.

WOW! How is it August already??? The summer has flown by...and school is starting in less than two weeks. I just can not believe it.
July absolutely FLEW by. I missed pretty much the entire month here at jonahbonah but, I was writing away over at Blissfully Domestic. Here's what you may {or may not have} missed.

last weekend was my son's first ever pinewood derby.
every scout looks forward to the day when he's handed a block of wood and told to go forth and create.
not only create but, create a car.
the look on jonah's face when i told him he was going to get to design, cut, sand, paint, add wheels and weights and then RACE a car was priceless.
he couldn't wait to get started.
a pack meeting prior to race day was set aside for the designing and cutting of the cars.
two dads brought fancy saws and sanders and cut the wood blocks into high speed racers for our boys. {no fingers were lost in the process, thank goodness.}
at that point i handed to car over to jonah and told him that he needed to sand it smooth and then he could paint it however his little heart desired.
he, with little help from his poppy, taped the edges and then painted the car green and black.
i think jonah was going for a camo look.
but, it was his car. he had full creative control.
wheels were added.
jonah gave the final "looks good" and we put his pinewood derby car in a resealable bag so that no debris got in to the wheels.
it was tough waiting for race day.
we were both very excited to see what jonah's car was capable of.
and then it came.
january 26th, 10:00am, weigh-in. {cars must be no more than 5 ounces}
we got there around 9:30.
i'm assistant den leader and i was helping in the concession stand.
who am i kidding? i would've been there early anyway...i was excited!
ok, so upon pulling into the parking lot of the little church where our pack holds its weekly meetings i notice a dad outside with some piece of power something.
i thought, "wow, it's a little late for that. hmph, jonah's been finished with his car for over a week."
little did i know he was boaring holes to add weights.
ok. that's cool.
we bounce out of the truck, still super excited about the car jonah had built with very little help, and go inside.
inside was a bit comical now that i'm looking back.
the scouts were all running around playing with each other. tag and hide and seek are popular among our boys.
the DADS were the ones getting weights on, adding graphite to the wheels, hurrying around like worker bees to ensure their boys victory at the finish line.
the scouts could care less. for real.
have you ever seen the movie down and derby??
it's a pretty accurate representation of what i witnessed last saturday.
now, i'm not saying we were the only family with a scout who built his own car.
there were others.
i know there were other scouts who built their own car.
but, i'd go out on a limb to say at least 50% of the cars raced on that track were built by the dads.
the sheer competition and disappointment on the dads faces gave it away.
all in all, though, it was a good day at the races!
the pinewood derby was a success.
cars were raced.
winners were chosen.
trophies were awarded.
fun was had by all.
{even if most of my fun was watching grown men act like little boys.}
{there was a sibling race, as well. the middle car is jake austin's. he built it himself.}
this little cutie came in first place in his den AND he was the pack champion!!
i'm sure you're wondering...jonah's car did not place. it came in 3rd {out of three} in every heat. and that's ok.
i may have jokingly told him that we are SO doing our research and starting early on next year's car.
he's already decided his car will be a military humvee.

is it wednesday already?
i don't think i've sat down for any significant length of time in days.
i've been too busy camping, fishing, rock climbing, and then getting back in to our regular weekly routine.
all ready for rock climbing.
jonah did great!!
and he earned his rock climbing badge!
next, it was time to go fishing.
fishing belt loop, check.
jonah had a greedy little fish.
he caught him with a worm and that fish still had someone else's bread in his mouth.
jake austin went with us, too.
{daddy had to work and the little ones stayed with ganny and poppy}
i didn't shower for nearly 48 hours, i set up {and took down} our tent on my own, i endured the crazy that was 45 screaming children, i peed in the woods, i climbed the rock wall and repelled down the repell wall. and i survived.
i knew when jonah expressed interest in scouting that it would be a good fit for him.
he loves the outdoors.
he's eager to learn.
he loves to fish and shoot guns {with supervision}.
he plays well with others.
he's been going every thursday for three weeks and LOVING every minute!
i go, too. and i'm loving it right along with him!!
our first week we were late because i misunderstood the calendar...but, it was raining so they didn't do much anyway.
our second week the boys covered their books with paper bags that they colored with markers.
last night the boys worked from their handbooks on the flag ceremony achievment.
the american flag is very special to our family, since we're a military family.
to see all of the boys so eager to learn how to be respectful of the flag was super!
one more thing jonah loves about cub scouts?
he gets to hang out with his new bud.
remember how i told you i am super excited about scouts, too?
i am.
in a couple of weeks jonah and i are going on our first cub scout campout!!!
and sleeping in a tent.
on the ground.
for real.
{well, i will be taking an air mattress...}
on our camping trip jonah will earn his fishing and swimming badges.
there is also an enormous rock climbing wall that jonah's pretty stoked to climb!
i can not wait to share those pictures with you!!!
since joining cub scouts i have searched and searched the web looking for anything and everything cub scouts.
and there's not much.
in an effort to give a mommy perspective on scouting, you will be hearing about all of our cub scout adventures!
get ready! we're going to have LOTS of fun!!!
