Tony Award Winning KINKY BOOTS in Jacksonville, FL May 2-7

This post sponsored by FSCJ Artist Series in Jacksonville. Tickets were provided for my honest opinion.

kinkyboots1140x450__slideshow

Ladies, gentlemen and those who have yet to make up your minds,

I went to see Kinky Boots the Musical tonight, and WOW! The lights, the songs, the costumes...it was breathtaking. I was captivated from the moment Charlie, the son in Price & Son's Shoes, come onto stage. And then there was little Simon, who took to the stage in his red high heels. You heard me correctly, HE was dancing around on stage in red high heels.

Fast forward a bunch of years, Charlie tries to run away from his shoemaker destiny. But, when his father passes away, he's forced back to the factory, to care for the workers that still need jobs. He was ready to throw in the towel, until he met Lola. She was tall, dressed in flashy clothing, and had a broken pair of high heels. Together Charlie and Lola will turn the shoe industry on its head; in the process, they'll change the hearts of many.

What happened to little Simon? Well, you'll have to go see Kinky Boots, and see for yourself.

Look for Kinky Boots in a city near you. This broadway production will have you laughing and crying, feeling feelings that are raw and real. After you've seen it, come tell me what you thought. I'd love to hear from you!

Is Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK Too Scary For Little Ones?

When asked if I'd like to go screen Disney's newest live-action film, The Jungle Book, I jumped at the opportunity. I've loved Disney's The Jungle Book classic [the animated version] for as long as I can remember. There's just something about little Mowgli and his best bear pal, Baloo. The fun loving duo could conquer the jungle...together. With a little wise guidance from Bagheera, that is.

Untitled

While the 1967, animated film was fun, with all the sing-along music and dancing, the 2016, live-action film is full of ACTION, not a lot of singing. From the moment the movie began, I was on the edge of my seat. Mowgli [played by new actor, Neel Sethi] is a sweet little boy who was, just as the original, raised by a family of wolves. When Shere Kahn visits Peace Rock during the dry season, he tells Akela, the leader wolf and Mowgli's wolf dad, that he wants Mowgli out of the jungle. Akela and Raksha decide now is the time for Mowgli to mosey on down to the man village. And, so begins his journey...

So, you're wondering if you should take your little ones? I took my Jett. He's a brand new 9 year old. There was a little boy behind us that was maybe 4 or 5. I honestly think it depends on your kid. Have you shown him scary-ish movies in the past? Jett LOVES animals and watches animal documentaries that show about the same amount of territorial violence that The Jungle Book shows. Are there a few scenes that have "jump at you" type action? Yes. But, my 9 year old wasn't afraid. And the little boy behind us didn't seem spooked either. I say, use your best judgement on whether or not it's okay to take your young children.

I wouldn't take small children who are easily spooked, or who are afraid of growling animals. There are some pretty intense scenes.

Overall, The Jungle Book is a phenomenally made movie. We loved it!

How To Draw Judy Hopps From Disney's ZOOTOPIA

ZOOTOPIA

Ask me what my favorite movie of 2016 has been so far. Go ahead, ask me. ZOOTOPIA!! Hands down, best movie of 2016!

I took my 8 year old, Jett, with me to see a pre-screening, and it was fabulous! The trailer, honestly, didn't have me too excited for this film. But, I'm glad I went against my instincts to go see it.

Zootopia is laugh out loud hilarious. It'll teach you that no matter how small you may be, BIG things can happen when you believe in yourself. Also, when told you can't do something, try harder. Seriously, you guys, so many life lessons rolled into one film. I LOVE IT!

ZOOTOPIA
FUN FACT: Artists were inspired by Mufasa from Disney’s classic film “The Lion King” when creating the look of Mayor Lionheart. I thought he resembled some lion we've seen before.

Wanna draw that go-getter little bunny who has hopped her way into everyone's heart? Grab a pencil and some paper, and watch this video. Oooohhh, she's just so cute!

If you haven't gone to see Zootopia yet, what are you waiting for?? If you have gone to see it, what did you think? Awesome, right?!?!

Disney's The Jungle Book OFFICIAL TRAILER

Untitled

Another fascinating movie is hitting the big screen this year. Disney's The Jungle Book, a movie I grew up watching in animation, is coming to life. Join Mowgli, the man-cub, and his furry friends in an epic adventure though the jungle of faith, family, and courage.

If you missed the debut of the official trailer on the televised Disneyland Special a couple of weeks ago, watch it below.

Directed by Jon Favreau ("Iron Man"), based on Rudyard Kipling's timeless stories and inspired by Disney's classic animated film, "The Jungle Book" is an all-new live-action epic adventure about Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), a man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. But Mowgli finds he is no longer welcome in the jungle when fearsome tiger Shere Khan (voice of Idris Elba), who bears the scars of Man, promises to eliminate what he sees as a threat. Urged to abandon the only home he’s ever known, Mowgli embarks on a captivating journey of self- discovery, guided by panther-turned-stern mentor Bagheera (voice of Ben Kingsley), and the free-spirited bear Baloo (voice of Bill Murray). Along the way, Mowgli encounters jungle creatures who don’t exactly have his best interests at heart, including Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson), a python whose seductive voice and gaze hypnotizes the man-cub, and the smooth-talking King Louie (voice of Christopher Walken), who tries to coerce Mowgli into giving up the secret to the elusive and deadly red flower: fire. The all-star cast also includes Lupita Nyong'o as the voice of the fiercely protective mother wolf Raksha, and Giancarlo Esposito as the voice of wolf pack’s alpha male Akela. “The Jungle Book” seamlessly blends live-action with photorealistic CGI animals and environments, using up-to-the-minute technology and storytelling techniques to immerse audiences in an enchanting and lush world.

Disney's Pete's Dragon - NEW Movie Poster

Untitled

The original, classic Pete's Dragon was certainly a childhood favorite of mine. I remember sitting down with a big bowl of popcorn on Sunday evening to watch Wonderful World of Disney, and sometimes Pete and Elliot would be the featured presentation. I still enjoy sitting down and watching the original with my kids. I can not wait to take my kids to see this NEW Disney movie, opening in theaters on August 12, 2016.

Read more from Disney about the upcoming movie...

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” opens in U.S. theaters on August 12, 2016.

Also, be sure to catch the debut of the brand new teaser trailer during "Wonderful World of Disney: Disneyland 60" on ABC Sunday night at 8:00PM EST.

Watch the Brand New Music Video for Shakira's "Try Everything," An All-New Original Song from ZOOTOPIA!!!

Zootopia5669c94c46210

You can purchase Shakira's single "Try Everything" here.

The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when rookie Officer Judy Hopps (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with a fast-talking, scam-artist fox, Nick Wilde (voice of Jason Bateman), to solve the mystery. Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Zootopia,” a comedy-adventure directed by Byron Howard (“Tangled,” “Bolt”) and Rich Moore (“Wreck-It Ralph,” “The Simpsons”) and co-directed by Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”), opens in theaters on March 4, 2016.

A Sweet Pairing for Valentine's Day with Josh Cellars Wine and Ghirardelli Chocolate {#asweetpairing}

Untitled

A special thank you to Ghirardelli & Josh Cellar wine for sponsoring this post.  All opinions are my own.

As a mom of five, I rarely get an free evening to spend with girlfriends. My nights are filled with cheer practice, football practice, dinner prep, and bedtime routines. You can imagine my excitement when my husband told me to have a Valentine's Day themed Girls Night In that featured chocolate, wine, crafts, and girlfriends.

My first stop for party supplies is always Walmart. This trip I found numerous varieties of Ghirardelli  chocolates, both for dessert making, gifting/party treat gifting and just plain 'ol eating. I also found Josh Cellar Wines that would be great for sipping as we craft.

January 2016

January 2016
Strawberries dipped in Ghirardelli Chocolate Melting Wafers and then sprinkled with heart shaped sprinkles only sound childish, they are divine from the first to last bite!

Fresh grapes and strawberries, and Ghirardelli chocolate drizzled cream puffs made for the perfect snacks while sipping wine.

January 2016
Well, I didn't get a completely kid-free evening, McKinley stayed home with me. She was excited for a night with "just the girls," too. She was a big help in teaching my guests how to make the no-sew pillow covers.

January 2016
This was everyone's finished pillow cover. I'll be sharing how we made them in an upcoming post. Stay tuned.

January 2016
We had such a great night...just the girls. I'll be sure to not let too much time go by before I have another girls night!

Please remember, have fun with your girlfriends, but drink responsibly.

Long Weekends are Great

Untitled

We had a long weekend this past weekend, and it was great! I always go into these things kind of dreading the lack of alone time. [Don't judge me...you know you love it when your kids are at school gettin' their education on while you get your "you time" on.] But, this weekend was different. The girls quietly played with their Shopkins. We even added to their collection with a few from the McDonald's Happy Meals.

Speaking of Shopkins, do your little girls just love these little things?? McKinley and Mabry will play for HOURS with them. They play store, ice cream truck, organize them, study their little faces; they LOVE them!

Untitled

Mary wanted rainbow sherbet for breakfast on Friday. You know what? Most cereals have more sugar than sherbet. And, there's fruit juice in sherbet, so there's that. Also, we shared that bowl. YUM!

Untitled

In a generation of all-things-electronic, we've gotten away from sending a good, old-fashioned, handwritten letter. I worked on a campaign last month and this week I received a lovely letter and notebook from the PR company. Small gestures = big impact. Remember that.

Untitled

On Saturday, it was a beautiful day so we decided it was a great day to go to the Jacksonville Zoo. We LOVE our zoo. If you are ever in the Jacksonville area, you must visit our zoo. I'm trying to think of just one or two exhibits to tell you to make sure to see, but seriously, there's SO MUCH GOODNESS at the Jacksonville Zoo! [I also have a very cool story to tell you about this day at the zoo, but it'll have to wait for another post. It was so very serendipitous...just you wait!]

Untitled

Oh, Jacksonville, you are beautiful. Sure, it isn't the NYC skyline, or the Windy City skyline, but it's our little skyline.

On Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I took Jonah, McKinley and Mabry into Downtown Jax. We stopped by Friendship Fountain before walking to the Museum of Science and History.

Untitled

I'm pretty intrigued by this building. I think after I finish this post I'm going to do a little research to see the back story on it.

Untitled

I love that my girls are growing up in the city that I grew up in. I love even more that they are getting to experience Downtown Jacksonville and that they love it!

Untitled

Am I the only one who thinks it's kind of funny that there's a phone booth in the museum? Like, on display, not for use. My kids asked me if they had these things back in the olden days when I was a kid. When I was a kid. #BecauseImAncient Really? Okay, yes we did. And, you had to know the phone number you needed to call. And, you had to have a quarter to make a call. AND, you only had like 5 minutes to talk before you had to add more money. It wasn't like a cell phone where the phone number is stored and you can talk endlessly. Not to mention, who carries change in their pockets? We all use our debit cards for everything these days. Boy, times have changed!

Untitled

Martin Luther King Jr., you made this world a better place. Because of you my kids can be dreamers. Jonah dreams to make the world a safer place. Dream big, baby boy.

Untitled

After the museum we drove over to Sweet Pete's to get a sweet treat. Mabry was passed out before we even got to the interstate. [notice the sucker in her hand]

Untitled

At the end of a great weekend came a beautiful sunset. This coming weekend is another long weekend. Let's see if we can have a repeat.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is Coming to Jacksonville, FL [WIN Tickets, Too!]

Untitled

As a kid, my mom took me to the circus almost every year. I loved seeing the clowns {I know that seems weird...most kids are afraid of clowns.} and the tight rope act. I was always fascinated with the elephants. I loved to see them sit on their hiney and balance the colorful ball on their head. Remember the guys who rode the motorbikes in the big cage ball? How in the world did they never crash? The bright lights. The contagious excitement. The talented performers. My little eyes were trying to keep up with everything that was happening in each of the three rings under the Big Top. The circus is definitely a favorite pastime of mine.

Untitled

Untitled

Once I had kids of my own, my mom continued the tradition of taking all of us to the circus. My kids all love the circus, from the 13 year old to the 2 year old, they LOVE it.  If I asked them their favorite act, they'd all have a different one. {Okay, maybe not the 2-year-old, but her eyes light up when she steps foot in the arena!}

Now, I take my kids to the circus each year, and I still love it as much as I did as a kid.
